What is the flash point:
It is the temperature at which the amount of steam released from the surface of the lubricant sample will ignite when a flame is introduced.
The lowest temperature at which steam from a lubricant sample continues to burn for 5 seconds is called the ignition point.
Evaluation of lubricant composition => lubricant quality.
Meaningful in preserving, storing and assessing contamination.
Note:
Lubricants with low viscosity have low flash point and flash point and vice versa
Napthenic base oils have a lower flash point and flash point than Paraffinic base oils when they have the same viscosity.
