SPECIFICATIONS: Total alkalinity (TBN)

1. Acidity

The acids are present in oil in the form of:

Organic acids
Inorganic acid
Due to additives in new oil

2. Alkalinity:

The alcaline is added and in the new oil to neutralize the products produced by the oxidation of the oil when used.

3. Acid and alkali index:

Acid index (AN, TAN):

HA + KOH => KA + H2O

The number of mg KOH needed to neutralize acid contained in 1 gram of oil.

Alkalinity index (BN, TBN)

MOH + HC1 => MC1 + H2O

The mg KOH ratio is equivalent to the amount of HC1 (or HC1O4) acid needed to neutralize the bases contained in 1 gram of oil.

Unit AN, BN: mg KOH / g of oil

4. Purpose of determination:

Know the properties of new oil.

Monitor oil degradation during use.

0% <S <1% => TBN <10

1% <S <2% => TBN = 25 -30

2% <S <3.5% => TBN = 30 – 40

3.5% <S <5% => TBN = 40 – 80
