- Basic features: power transmission
- Important properties: high compressive strength and high boiling point
- Brake fluid is very sensitive to moisture.
- Humidity increases compression and reduces boiling temperature.
Classify brake fluid according to DOT standard
| Grade | DOT 2 | DOT 3 | DOT 4 | DOT 5 | DOT 5.1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dry Boiling point (oC) | 190 | 205 | 230 | 260 | 260 |
| Wet boiling point (oC) (with 3.7 vol% water) |
140 | 140 | 155 | 180 | 180 |
DOT 2 is Castor oil/alcohol based
DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 is glycol-ether based, they are hygroscopic.
