Oil classification according to API (Part 1)

Petrol engine lubricating oil:

• S = service, spark
• SA pure no additives, not suitable for use.
• SB Has additive for surface protection, and anti-oxidant.
• SC (1964), SD (1968), SE (1972), SF (1980), SG (1988), SH (1993 -1997), SJ (1997 2001), SL (2001 2003), SM (2004 2010)
• SN 2011

Diesel engine lubricating oil:

• C = commercial, compression
• CA, CB, CC
• CD Narrow use range; CE turbocharger, heavy load motor
• CF indirect injection engine, CF-2 high speed motor, CF-4 high speed
• CG-4 high-speed four-stroke, CI-4 high-speed
• CJ-4 required for use since 2007
